Council is pleased to announce that the 42nd Battalion Memorial Pool in North Rockhampton will be open from this weekend.

Chair of Council’s Parks and Recreation Committee, Councillor Cherie Rutherford said council officers and contractors had worked hard to get both the 50m swimming pool and the smaller wading pool open as quickly as possible.

“We realise the importance of this pool to our community, especially as the hot weather of summer is really setting in,” Cr Rutherford said.

“Today Council has passed the necessary resolution to allow us to have an operator start work immediately.

“This means that with necessary repairs now completed, an operator will be able to come in and get the 50m pool and wading pool ready for the public this weekend.

“We will be celebrating the reopening with a movie afternoon on Sunday screening the popular film ‘Journey 2: The Mysterious Land’.

“The pool will be open from 3pm to 9pm this Sunday 16 December 2012 and will resume normal operating hours, which will be advertised on our website, from 17 December 2012.”

Cr Rutherford said she hoped the facility would be well used by the public over the summer period.

“Now that we can get the pool open I’m hopeful it will be a very popular way for people to cool down,” Cr Rutherford said.

“We are also hopeful that we will soon be able to assist Education Queensland with getting the Gracemere Pool open to the public as soon as possible.

“We are in the final stages of negotiation with Education Queensland and hopefully we will have some good news about the opening of this pool in the near future.”

Cr Rutherford thanked the community for their patience while Council worked to get these facilities open to the public.
