Autism Queensland’s EarlyAQtion team is currently organising Fun, Friends & Feelings Programs for the September/October school holidays.  These will run as week-long intensive group programs with 3 – 4 children and their parent/s attend each morning or afternoon for the week.  The number of programs taking place during this week will depend on demand and then upon the need to organise children into appropriate groupings.

Fun, Friends & Feelings Programs will be held at Autism Queensland’s centre in Rockhampton.

These programs incorporate the use of therapy techniques supported by the latest research and provide the opportunity for children to learn and practice peer relationship skills such as turn-taking, sharing, conversation, emotional regulation and interactive play.  These vital skills are best addressed in a group situation, with peers, rather than one-on-one with an adult.

Techniques used will include video self-modelling, IT supports such as iPads, social skills and communication activities, along with toys and games, all with an emphasis on ensuring that the children have fun.

Each group will consist of 3 – 4 children with at least one of each child’s parents also required to be present at each session.  The groups are organised, as much as possible, according to age and compatibility.  The programs will consist of five 2½ hour sessions on consecutive days and are staffed by autism specialists who have backgrounds in occupational therapy, speech pathology and special education.

An optional follow-up visit can be conducted either at the child’s early childhood setting or home within the first two weeks after the school holidays.

To be eligible for the program, children must be under the age of 7 and have a diagnosis of Autism Spectrum Disorder.

There is a cost associated with attendance in this program. This fee includes all group sessions, the individual follow-up visit, any individualised resources prepared and a report. This fee is able to be covered with Helping Children with Autism funding.
