Council’s Planning and Regulatory Committee Chair Councillor Ellen Smith said the program would inspect properties over a two month period and fines would be issued for non-compliance of unregistered or non-microchipped animals.

“Some people might not realise, but microchipping and registering your dog is a requirement under animal management legislation and our local laws,” Cr Smith said.

“With this in mind, our Council Officers will be checking and inspecting properties in Mount Morgan, The Mine, Boulder Creek, Horse Creek, Hamilton Creek, Walterhall, Baree and Moongan between the 1 April and 31 May for animals that are not registered or microchipped.

“I’m really encouraging pet owners who haven’t yet considered microchipping and registration in those areas to do so before 1 April as we will be issuing fines for non-compliance.

“Most pet owners do the right thing, but we want those who don’t to be responsible and to do the right thing by their pet. Firstly so we can return any lost animals back to them safe and sound, and secondly because it is a requirement under the Animal Management (Cats and Dogs) Act 2008,” Cr Smith said.

As a result of the inspections carried out in Gracemere between October 2015 and February 2016, 1084 new dog registrations were generated under the approved systematic inspection program.

The purpose of the program is to ensure compliance with the microchipping and registration requirements of the Animal Management (Cats and Dogs) Act 2008 and the keeping of animal requirements of Rockhampton Regional Council Local Law 1 (Administration) 2011 and Rockhampton Regional Council Local Law 2 (Animal Management) 2011.
