Rockhampton Basketball Incorporated has announced that the club have secured a naming rights sponsorship deal with local construction firm Woollam Constructions for its U23 representative program.
RBI General Manager Heath Millar said, “It is obviously fantastic to have a local business show interest and provide support for our local basketball players as they transition from juniors into our Rockets and Cyclones programs.”
Millar, also the Frenchville Sports Club Rockhampton Cyclones head coach, added, “the support from Woollam Constructions allows us to provide a vital developmental pathway for our local aspiring athletes. Due to the cost of travel needed to find competitive games for our local talent the program was at risk of folding and Woolham’s support will ensure that this program will continue to provide opportunities to our athletes.”
Rockets head coach Neal Tweedy stated, “I think it is a great program and initiative which will help develop our local players and keep a strong Rockhampton presence in the Rockets and Cyclones programs.”
Also boding well for the program is the announcement that former Rocket player and current assistant coach Paul Scott will provide a solid connection from the U23 program to the Rockets as he takes up his first head coaching role with U23 men. Cyclones head coach Heath Millar has continued his role in the female program by accepting the position as U23 head coach for the females. Millar has spearheaded a new development academy for the top female players in Rockhampton with the assistance of Glenn Hansen from Vector Health.
“This year I wanted to really step up the development opportunities for our female athletes and I think we have done that with the implementation of the Cyclones Development Academy. We are running a 10 week program for the top females in Rockhampton from 12-23 years of age. Not only are the players getting insight to what it takes to become a Cyclone but they are also getting top instruction from Glenn regarding their athletic development.”
